Vampire Songs: The Shadow Ensemble scores Nosferatu

Still from F.W. Murnau's silent film Nosferatu

Fresh off the heels of their live scoring of sci-fi classic Metropolis for Trillium Salon Series, the Shadow Ensemble returns with a presentation of F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu. The group, dedicated to live scoring silent films, moves away from musically interpreting glittering towers and subterranean art deco factories to tackle the rustic foreboding mists of Transylvania.

In a one-time performance at Nightbird Books in Fayetteville on June 24th, the ensemble will take positions across the venue, lending the film an eerie and all-enveloping ambience.

"Imagine before surround sound technology existed, if a bunch of musicians tried to create the surround sound experience," says ensemble leader Ryan Cockerham.

The folk-tale nature of Nosferatu meant a major change in the ensemble's approach. Horror film staples like the theramin will remain, but the presentation will be augmented with zither, accordion, flute, clarinet and an overall acoustic bent.
