Scratching the Surface: Mars Mission Stays Close to Home

Can a Spanish river teach us about life on Mars? NASA says yes.

Welcome to Scratching the Surface with Caitlin Ahrens, the Pluto Manager at the Center for Space and Planetary Science. Today, Caitlin looks not to outer space, but to Rio Tinto in Spain. This acidic river--the closest to a Martian environment on Earth--is the site of an analog mission to develop tools and technologies that could possibly be recreated on Mars. The MARTE mission is now working on a drill to explore Mars' subsurface and search for liquid water.
