Of Note for Thr., Aug. 18, 2016: Strauss's Metamorphosen

Richard Strauss was 80 when he penned "Metamorphosen," a piece with 23 individual parts for 10 violins, 5 violas, 5 cellos, and 3 basses. Written in 1944 when much of Germany was already ravaged from World War II, the piece, in the words of Rosemary Delia who writes the liner notes to the New Century Chamber Orchestra recording of the piece, suggests "that this unprecedented moment in history--perhaps the end of history--called for a valedictory utterance of grief and mourning that could only be made by a fragmented collective of solitary voices." Hear it as the highlight to tonight's program from 8 to 10 p.m. or stream it in its entirety here.
