Tim Page writes in the liner notes to Mahler's 2nd symphony recorded by the New York Philharmonic under Bernstein, that Mahler's 2nd "provides a persuasive and representative summary... with its colorful orchestration, elaborate ambition, confessional qualities, extreme subjectivity and, finally, that unmistakably Mahlerian mixture of the nostalgic and passionate set cheek-by-jowl with ferocious and nightmarish fantasias."
