KUAF Arts Beat: Art and the Open Road

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art unveils its first ever large scale photography exhibit this weekend with The Open Road: Photography and the American Road TripThe project, which makes its debut as a nationally touring exhibition at Crystal Bridges, is also a book of the same name that began with curator David Campany and Aperture editor Denise Wolff.

"That dream of the road trip and the open road was something really appealing to me," Wolff explains as she elaborates on why she was drawn in. "Working in photography, I realized that some of the best photography in the history of the medium was made on American roads and people taking road trips as an inspiration to make art."

The exhibit, which features 19 photographers who take on the American road, is on display at Crystal Bridges from  Feb. 27 through May 30. An opening panel discussion takes place in the Great Hall at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 and will feature Campany, Wolff along with photographers Stephen Shore and Justine Kurland.

Ahead of the opening I spoke with Denise Wolff, Stephen Shore and Crystal Bridges curator Ali Demorotski. Listen to the full story below, which includes the Stephen Shore photograph "U.S. 97, South of Klamath Falls, Oegon July 21, 1973."
